about

Have you ever fell, the adrenalin kicks in and you’re back up off the floor right back to usual programming instead of realizing you’ve just injured yourself.
Later, you give yourself the chance to assess the damage and well, it is not too bad, it is going to hurt tomorrow.
At that pinnacle moment of tumbling over you know you have to get back up, keep moving.
This song was inspired by an event just like that. It was nothing special, I just bailed. Hard. The funniest part was that I was more concerned with catching my cell phone rather than myself and so I got a couple of big roasties. Somewhere on my phone are some selfies of a roughed up me with blood stained arms and legs that I took to document (although I’m not sure anyone would want to see those).
But next thing you know I am writing down lyrics and laying down the keys and melody to this song. It was the most natural expression of exactly what happened to me. And I do it often. I hurt myself or get hurt and instead of stopping to be like “ouch” – lets heal this thing up, I continue to carry on with the task at hand. I realized everyone does this in different ways.
The photo in the artwork for this track was taken on the 30th of December 2019. We were out for supper in Cape Town with friends. I think back to that time, about the “injuries” back then and the “falls” that came from pretty much the 1st week of 2020.
I don’t need to go into detail but I sit here writing this and realize just how tough the last 2 years have been. This song is a cathartic moment in letting go and connecting with myself and everybody else (who wants to listen).
I am incredibly excited to say that I wrote the lyrics, performed, recorded all the instruments and sang on this song. A first for me and something I hope I will do more of.
I produced the track too.
Alex Coetzee (AKA Leeu) did the final mix and master.
My brother, Zach, helped me with the artwork and my girlfriend, Aniqa, took the photo on a disposable camera.

lyrics

Verse
You can hit the ground running Beware just watch your step Today I fell on the roadside One slow moment to realize There was no way out
So I dove right in, dove right in, dove right in. I kept running and shouting inside my head Dove right in, don’t stop get up and go
Chorus
One minute you’re looking ahead Right left
Next you’re down on the floor And it goes
One minute you’re looking ahead Next you’re down on the floor Right left just keep on stepping
Verse
Rolled up with a sensation
Told myself
Don’t stop, get up, get up, get up Get up and go
Get up and go, get up and go, get up and go Don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop
Get up and go, get up and go
Chorus
One minute you’re looking ahead Right left
Next you’re down on the floor And it goes
One minute you’re looking ahead Next you’re down on the floor Right left
Just keep on stepping
One minute you’re looking ahead
Right left
Next you’re down on the floor And it goes
One minute you’re looking ahead Next you’re down on the floor Right left
Just keep on stepping
